Kim covered by ‘wall of bodyguards’ strolls Singapore quay before meeting Trump

Singapore's foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan tweeted a selfie with Kim on the surprise walkabout late Monday.

This image made from video of an undated still image broadcast in a news bulletin by North Korea's KRT on Monday, May 15, 2017, shows leader Kim Jong Un at what was said to be a missile test site at an undisclosed location in North Korea.

Trump and Kim are expected to meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Singapore, which is 9 p.m. Monday in NY.

Mr. Trump's actions led to an extraordinary juxtaposition: an abrupt public feud and deterioration of ties between the US and Canada at the same moment as warm words and a detente between the USA and North Korea.

This time they had it a bit easier, though - as the North Korean leader preferred to walk nonchalantly, enjoying the evening and clearly not being in a hurry.

Instead of flying the Pyongyang-Shanghai-Singapore route that takes around six-and-a-half hours but passes over sea, Kim Jong-un flew via Beijing, which took around 10 hours.

Donald Trump 'optimistic' ahead of one-on-one talks with Kim Jong
It's a dramatic departure for Trump, who kicked off 2018 bragging that his nuclear button is "much bigger" than Kim's. Trump has offered few details of what a framework for that process would look like.

Kim is not believed to have left his hotel since a meeting with Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, soon after his arrival on Sunday in the city-state. They'll be joined later by their staffs for an expanded meeting and a working lunch.

According to FlightRadar24, a website that tracks the flights of various aircraft, thousands of people followed the progress of Kim Jong-un's plane.

Pompeo has not said if Trump would consider withdrawing almost 28,000 USA troops from the Korean Peninsula.

The shift coincides with a shakeup on the president's national security team - the addition of national security adviser John Bolton, who has been candid about his view that the North Koreans will never voluntarily give up their nuclear weapons, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a former Kansas congressman with a hawkish reputation.

The walkabout occurred less than 12 hours before Kim's potentially world-changing day of diplomacy, when he will become the first-ever North Korean leader to meet with a sitting US President.

Olivia Enos of the US -based Heritage Foundation is urging Trump to not ignore rights concerns.

Kim told Lee: "The entire world is watching the historic summit between the DPRK and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparation for the historic summit".

"Hi, I'm Kim Yong-chol, the one you blame for sinking the Cheonan."

Exuding confidence, Trump said he has done relatively little formal preparation.

North Korea, it concludes, can only "actively contribute to world peace and human wellbeing", by engaging with other nations.

He's also repeatedly expressed his support for a meeting between Trump and Kim - even offering to facilitate it or serve as an ambassador of sorts.
