An Al Shabab spokesman told Reuters it had carried out the attack in the coastal town of Kismayo, and claimed a higher death toll. The U.S. military said its personnel had provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission.

China has said that it thoroughly investigated the initial case reported by the United States and found no reasons or clues to explain it.

The US is testing two staff members from its Cuban embassy in Havana amid concerns they may have been subjected to sonic attacks. It advised them "not to attempt to locate the source of any unidentified auditory sensation". The Cuban government denied involvement in the attacks and the State Department sent more than 60 percent of Americans working at the US embassy there home.

The bulk of cases took place between the end of 2016 and the summer of 2017, with symptoms including hearing loss, cognitive impairment, vertigo, insomnia or vision problems.

China reaffirmed today that its official investigations had not found any evidence of alleged health problems of USA diplomats working in this country.

US officials said Friday that they had pulled two workers from Cuba and were testing them for possible brain injury.

Asked about the latest incidents, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the US had not formally raised the matter with Beijing.

The Cuba incidents sparked concerns that the employees had been targeted with some novel sort of sonic attack, and similar reports this week in Guangzhou, China, have prompted several evacuations of diplomats and family members. It is also the only USA diplomatic installation in China authorized to process immigrant visas and handle adoptions. The AP reported that out of the approximately 170 American staffers in the consulate, 150 have undergone the examinations.
