Army says soldier from Arizona killed in Somalia

Four U.S. servicemembers who were wounded in an extremist attack in Somalia that killed one special operations soldier have been treated and discharged, the U.S. military said Saturday.

The US military has stepped up its airstrikes in the Horn of Africa nation after getting President Donald Trump's approval for expanded military operations there.

An Al Shabab spokesman told Reuters it had carried out the attack in the coastal town of Kismayo, and claimed a higher death toll.

The American forces were operating alongside Somali troops.

"We attacked a military base ... killed one USA soldier, two Kenyan soldiers and nine Somali soldiers from Jubbaland state".

Still, the US has made several changes in the way its forces have been operating in Africa, the result of an investigation into an October 2017 ambush of USA special operations forces in Niger that left four Americans and four Nigeriens dead.

Al Shabaab is also fighting to drive out African Union mandated peace keeping force AMISOM.

USA troops with Somali and Kenyan forces came under mortar and small-arms fire Friday in Jubaland. The al-Shabab group was blamed for the truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and raised concerns about al-Shabab's ability to build ever-larger explosives.

US forces have been working with the Somali government to fight the al-Shabab terror group, which has publicly boasted of its alliance with al-Qaeda and has been fighting Somalia's internationally recognized government for control of the country since the militant group was ousted from Mogadishu in 2011 by African Union-led forces. The group was pushed out of the capital, Mogadishu, in 2011 but still controls some regions of the country.

Late previous year USA drone strikes also began targeting a small presence of fighters linked to the Islamic State group in Somalia's north.

"There has been no direction at this time to adjust force size in AFRICOM [U.S. Africa Command]", said Pentagon spokeswoman Major Sheryll Klinkel. The U.S. military said its personnel had provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission.
