She says the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain this week take her right back to the day her father died.

Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide, Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses are three leading causes of deaths with growing prevalence. She told reporters, "We did see increases in younger and older people".

A few days ago fashion designer Kate Spade also committed suicide, with her husband declaring he did not know she was at risk.

In 2016 alone, there were nearly 45,000 deaths from suicide.

Bourdain and Spade died at 61 and 55, respectively - an age cohort with strikingly high suicide rates in the USA, according to the CDC.

Earlier this year Gov. Ralph Northam signed a new law that requires the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services to report its progress and activity on suicide prevention every year. The U.S. average rate went up to 15.4 from 12.3 in the same periods.

Schuchat said that suicide is a national issue, and that no one community is immune.

"We've asked the teens [in one of their programs] what their thoughts on the series are".

Despite this, she said there are studies that show a rise in teen suicide during the time the series began streaming.
