Facebook privacy bug affects 14 million users

The web goliath said that aout 14 million people were affected by a bug that, for a nine-day span between May 18 and 27, caused profile posts to be set as public by default, allowing any Tom, Dick or Harriet to view the material. In the process of creating this feature, Facebook said it accidentally made the suggested audience for all new posts public.

The glitch set a user's post to be shared to "everyone", even if a user had previously chosen a more restricted option, such as "friends of friends". Affected users will see a "Please review your posts" pop-up in their Facebook feed so they can review what private details might have leaked.

Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said this did not affect past posts. "We'd like to apologize for this mistake". But while the bug was active, from 18 May to 27 May, the setting was automatically changed to public.

The fixes started rolling out on May 22 and Facebook seemed more than willing to stress that while they messed with your privacy settings users were still able, if they noticed, to change their settings back during that time.
