Qatar Airways Chief Says a Woman Couldn't Run His Airline

Mr Al Baker responded by saying that "it's not in Qatar Airways".

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said his remarks at the closing of a global airlines gathering on Tuesday had been intended as a joke and taken out of context.

Al Baker also attempted to fix the damage in a subsequent interview, telling Bloomberg News that he had only been referencing one person, rather than the entire staff.

He added that Qatar Airways "firmly believes in gender equality in the workplace, and our airline has been a pioneer in our region in this regard".

The airline industry wants to attract more women, but no one seems to have told the trade body's new chairman.

Google silently exits the tablet market
This goes a long way towards explaining how Google's engineers might have overlooked the category while updating the website. Google has always struggled to compete against iOS in the tablet market and is likely to focus on Chrome OS in the future.

Insisting this was not the case at his own airline, he added: "Of course it has to be led by a man, because it is a very challenging position".

That's when Al Baker said that "of course" it "has to be led by a man".

The Qatar Airways boss later defended the carrier, saying it was the first Middle Eastern airline to have a female pilot and that other women were in senior roles.

"What are some of the resolutions, some of the ideas, that IATA will try to bring to the forefront, to have more women represented in airlines?" the reporter asked.

The issue of gender imbalance in aviation was a hot topic at the annual meeting of IATA, only six of whose 280 member airlines have female chief executives. "As a matter of fact (at) Air Italy the majority shareholder has shortlisted women to be CEO and as minority shareholder we are actively encouraging that".

IOS 12, macOS, watchOS 5 and more
However, unlike iOS updates in the past, iOS 12 may be more focused on refinement rather than offering a bunch of new features. The next version of iOS tends to come out around the time of the next Apple event, which usually happens around September.

US and some European airlines have accused Gulf carriers of unfair competition based on subsidies and social policies, but Walsh - whose group counts Qatar Airways as a shareholder - said he believed Gulf airlines competed on an equal footing.

Asked whether he'd welcome a female executive as CEO, Al Baker said: "It will be my pleasure to have a female CEO candidate I could then develop to become CEO after me".

"In Qatar we have no differentiation, female have equal opportunity like male".

"If we're leaving out nearly 50 per cent of the population in our search for the next generation of 640,000 pilots, we're clearly not tapping into all of the talent that's available", Alan Joyce, the airline's chief executive, said in a statement this year.

Mr Joyce said that having a diverse workforce could help drive profits. It's taken 40 years to get to 10 percent, ' he said at the CAPA-Centre for Aviation summit also taking place in Sydney.
