Fashion designer Kate Spade found dead in NY

News of Kate Spade's death rocked the industry when the Associated Press reported the handbag and accessories designer's death at her Park Avenue apartment in NY shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The 55-year-old business mogul was reportedly found by a housekeeper after hanging herself, and allegedly left a suicide note.

"I'd come so very close to getting her to go in for treatment... we'd get so close to packing her bags... she was definitely anxious about what people would say if they found out".

Kate Spade New York has more than 140 stores across the United States and more than 175 outlets across the world. Spade sold her remaining portion of the company in 2006, and Kate Spade was recently purchased by Coach in 2017 for a reported $2.4 billion. In 2016, Kate launched a new line named after her daughter, Frances Valentine. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, and husband Andy Spade.

The family said through a spokesman that they loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly.

Fans wrote of how simply owning something with Kate Spade's name on it was special. She started as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle, and launched her company in 1993 based on six bag designs.

A New York Police Department source told the New York Post that Spade left behind a note.

The officials said she was found with a red scarf around her neck attached to a doorknob.

David Spade has broken his silence following the death of Kate Spade Tuesday.

Kate Spade New York issued a statement confirming the "incredibly sad news" of its founder's death.

"We are all devastated by today's tragedy", her family said in a statement through a spokesman.

"She was also a staple of NYC who spread good will", she said.
