GitHub acquired by Microsoft

It has just been announced that Microsoft has acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock.

The acquisition makes sense, considering Microsoft's gradual embrace of open source software, as well as the closure of its competing developer service; Microsoft's own code repository, CodePlex, was killed off in December.

GitHub now has over 27 million software developers contributing to over 80 million repositories of code.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's enthusiasm and support for open-source software has been instrumental in the acquisition, indicates the Bloomberg report. Rumours of the acquisition began circulating at a more feverish pace on Friday, as multiple news sources suggested that a deal was expected to be announced today. At one point of time, Google's senior VP of ads and commerce and Microsoft's exec Nat Freidman were under consideration for the GitHub CEO's role, a source told Business Insider.

GitHub's co-founder and current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will join Microsoft as a technical fellow to work on software initiatives.

IOS 12, macOS, watchOS 5 and more
However, unlike iOS updates in the past, iOS 12 may be more focused on refinement rather than offering a bunch of new features. The next version of iOS tends to come out around the time of the next Apple event, which usually happens around September.

"Microsoft's purchase of GitHub could provide tools for users to develop applications on its Azure Cloud platform", said Ivan Feinseth, Chief Investment Officer at markets research firm Tigress Financial Partners.

But he said Microsoft and GitHub have already collaborated on projects, and "their vision for the future closely matches our own".

Microsoft has been extremely skeptical of open-source in the past, as it directly threatens their proprietary technology, but it seems the company is now making the shift to try and keep up with everyone else.

Microsoft's projects actually attracted the most contributors compared to any other on GitHub a year ago - almost double that of Facebook, the next most popular.

Microsoft is buying GitHub for $7.5 billion. Microsoft is the top contributor to the platform, and it insists that it won't muck things up once the acquisition closes later this year, noting that GitHub will operate independently.

Fears over Italy turmoil spread through global markets
Since the vote, Five Star leader Di Maio and Salvini, the League leader, were locked in talks with Mattarella and struggled to form a government.

"Together we will continue to advance GitHub as a platform loved by developers and trusted by organizations".

"Most importantly, we recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", Nadella said. In fact, Microsoft has been using an open source version of Git control system for Windows development.

"It's incumbent on us to use the philosophy that's made GitHub successful", says Friedman.

"So as we look to the next decade of software development and beyond, we know it's all about the developer".
