Facebook has reportedly been sharing user data with phone makers for ages

In response to the report, The New York Times noted that Apple stopped accessing Facebook data since last September, BlackBerry didn't collect or mine Facebook data, and Microsoft simply used data to serve notifications and add friends contacts but didn't store any user data; only Samsung declined to comment.

Friends of friends: On the above point, the story says that one reporter discovered that the BlackBerry Hub gleaned private data, including political leanings and events they planned to attend, from 556 of his friends.

A New York Times investigation published late Sunday revealed the scope of data-sharing deals Facebook struck over the years with companies like Apple, Samsung and Microsoft.

While the device partnerships allowed Facebook to expand its reach, it let the phone makers offer customers popular features of the social network, such as messaging, "like" buttons and address books.

The report raises questions over whether or not Facebook violated a 2011 agreement with the Federal Trade Commission that it would not override users privacy settings without first getting their expressed consent.

She cruised to victory from there, and celebrated with one of many first pumps, a smile, and a wave to the crowd. So I'm just really trying to get my bearings and trying to feel out where I am and see where I can go".

Some device makers could retrieve personal information even from users' friends who believed they had barred any sharing, the New York Times found.

"These partnerships work very differently from the way in which app developers use our platform", Ime Archibong, Facebook vice president told the daily.

On April 24, weeks after CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified to Congress about user privacy, Facebook said in an announcement to developers that it was winding down access to device-integrated APIs.

Facebook's take on this is that the device manufacturers are "service providers" rather than third parties of the sort where consent would be needed to share information.

The data-sharing arrangements date from as early as 2008; majority continue through to today, although Facebook began dismantling some of the deals in April - the same month its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified about privacy protections and political propaganda in Congress. And our partnership and engineering teams approved the Facebook experiences these companies built.

Sonu Jalan is also said to be associated with Dawood Ibrahim and is a close aide of another top global bookie running the racket. It purportedly had the phone numbers of more than 100 bookies, the name of a Bollywood celebrity, contractors and builders.

According to The New York Times, Facebook did this even after it declared it would no longer share such "deep access" with external companies.

"These partners signed agreements that prevented people's Facebook information from being used for any other objective than to recreate Facebook-like experiences".

"Given that these APIs enabled other companies to recreate the Facebook experience, we controlled them tightly from the get-go", it states. Cambridge Analytica has since been dissolved. Twenty-two of the partnerships have since ended, it said.

A former Facebook employee who led third-party ad and privacy compliance, Sandy Parakilas, noted that the program was controversial even within Facebook.

'It is shocking that this practice may still continue six years later, and it appears to contradict Facebook's testimony to Congress that all friend permissions were disabled'.
