Syria's Assad to meet Kim in North Korea

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that a highly-anticipated meeting with Kim Jong-un is back on, after receiving a letter from the North Korean leader.

"How would you like to see what was in that letter?"

Others compared the delivery to a novelty greeting card or an envelope used in a game show.

The announcement came as anticipation mounts for a historic nuclear summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in Singapore on June 12, following a whirlwind round of diplomacy.

The director of UK Steel, Gareth Stace, said he feared there was clear potential for a damaging trade war. In a sternly-worded statement , he added that the European Union would "not negotiate under threat".

"I think so. I think there is a good chance that we'll have talks as planned in Singapore on June 12th".

But mere minutes later, in response to another question, the president responded: "I haven't seen the letter yet". There were also widespread reports that North Korea helped Syria build a nuclear plant that was destroyed by Israeli bombing in 2007.

North Korea made a similar gesture with its neighbor to the south in February, during the Winter Olympics. After spending months trading insults and war threats with him, has Kim learned that the way to influence Mr. Trump is to appeal to his ego - something South Korean President Moon Jae-in seemed to try in April when he openly vouched for Mr. Trump as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize? The Washington Post, citing two people familiar with the matter, reported that the open to covering the costs of lodging at North Korea's preferred, five-star luxury hotel.

Since then, preparations for the meeting kicked into high gear, with delegations from Washington and Pyongyang holding meetings in the demilitarized zone in North Korea and in NY. "But you know, the North Koreans, I've negotiated with them".

Trump and Pompeo walked Kim Yong Chol to his auto. "I said, 'Would you want me to open it?' He said, 'You can read it later.'" He later added, "I may be in for a big surprise, folks". "But the relationships are building, and that's a very positive thing", Trump told reporters after taking photographs with Kim Yong-chol and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Cho said that while he did not oppose China's participation in declaring an end to the Korean War, Beijing's involvement must come after the two Koreas and the United States reach an agreement and that there was no need for the three countries to wait for Beijing's participation.

For Cho, who was also involved with the Roh Moo-hyun administration's attempt at declaring an end to the Korean War, Trump-Kim summit offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as leaders in Seoul and Washington have more time to push for the initiative than their predecessors.

The mundane but diplomatically fraught billing issue is just one of numerous logistical concerns being hammered out between two teams led by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin and Kim's de facto chief of staff, Kim Chang Son, as they strive toward a June 12 meeting.
