Singapore Airlines to launch world's longest commercial flight in October

The airline has announced it will launch the world's longest commercial flight on October 11, with a non-stop service between Singapore and NY using the new Airbus A350-900ULR.

This will be a daily flight and a non-stop journey, covering nearly 16,700 kms and will take around 18 hours and 45 minutes to complete.

Singapore Airlines previously operated the 9,521-mile route but stopped service in 2013 when rising fuel prices made the journey unprofitable.

In the beginning, the flight is planned to operate three times a week from Changi Airport in Singapore to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Singapore-New York flights will be the longest in the world with a distance of about 10,300 miles and a travel time of almost 19 hours. "We are pleased to be leading the way with these new non-stop flights [offering] our customers the fastest way to travel between the two cities".

It is known to offer a more comfortable environment-a wider body, higher ceilings, larger windows and lighting that reduces jetlag.

Singapore Airlines is the only customer till now for Airbus' A350-900ULR, an ultra-long range version of the twin-engine A350 jet. The airline is expected to take delivery of its first ULR in September with all seven to be delivered by the end of the year. "Its carbon composite airframe also allows for improved air quality due to a more optimised cabin altitude and humidity levels", the airline said. The carrier now flies from Los Angeles (non stop to Seoul and Tokyo), New York JFK (non stop to Frankfurt), Houston Bush Intercontinental (non stop to Manchester, England) and San Francisco (non stop to Singapore and Hong Kong).

Singapore Airlines also plans to introduce non-stop flights from Singapore to Los Angeles eventually.
