French Open 2018: Defending champions Jelena Ostapenko crashes out on Day 1

Defending champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia was sent packing in straight sets as the French Open began on Sunday at Roland Garros.

Ostapenko sent shockwaves around Paris and far beyond when she claimed a first tour-level title at Roland Garros a year ago, but it was a very different story 12 months on.

Not since Anastasia Myskina went down in the opening round of the 2005 tournament has the French Open lost its women's champion so early, and the 20-year-old slipped off court, her head bowed, ruing what she called a "terrible day".

Belgium's David Goffin appeared to be on his way out of the tournament after losing the opening two sets to Dutchman Robin Haase, but the eighth seed regained composure to win the match 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-0.

The Latvian stunned the world previous year with a series of upsets before beating Simona Halep in the final but struggled for any sort of rhythmn today against her Ukrainian opponent.

The 23-year-old, who won her second consecutive Italian Open title last weekend, will next play either 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone or Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova. She was the first unseeded player in the 50-year Open era to win the women's trophy at Roland Garros.

The No. 22 Johanna Konta of Britain was handed an early exit on the red clay of the French Open, beaten 6-4, 6-3 by Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the French Open with an injured right elbow.

Rus is ranked 106th and made it into the main draw in Paris as a "lucky loser". Not surprisingly, Dimitrov won 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (1).

"I just found out about 30, 35 minutes before I had to go out", Dimitrov said in a news conference.

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina recovered from 5-1 down, saving a set point, to blow away Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.

All in all, it was quite a Day 1 at the only Grand Slam site that gets things started on a Sunday.

Also, how the fans will react, how the media will react. "Well, I think that's good", Trump said . "I brought it out. An anonymous source within the NFL tells Bleacher Report , "Our league is f--g terrified of Trump".

At the beginning of the second set, Ostapenko made a break, leading 0-2.

Svitolina has reached the quarterfinals in Paris in two of the past three years.

"To be ready for a Grand Slam is always the goal, the main goal for me". There are no ideal days in tennis.

The forecast calls for showers in the afternoon.

A year after stunning the tennis world by winning the French Open for the first tour title of her career, Jelena Ostapenko is again in rare company: a first-round loser as the defending champion at a Grand Slam tournament.

Other leading men were forced to work a lot harder in matches they would have been expected to breeze through: No. 2-seeded Alexander Zverev, No. 4 Grigor Dimitrov and No. 19 Kei Nishikori all faced two-sets-to-one deficits and all emerged to win Wednesday.
