Amazon to block Australian shoppers from its US website

July 1 marks the date that new GST rules come into play, with 10 per cent GST applying to all online purchases shipped into Australia from overseas.

Until now, GST has applied only to most goods sold in Australia and imported goods worth over A$1,000, making relatively low-priced imported items cheaper than their equivalents in local stores.

It was the move we all dreaded was coming: Australian shoppers will no longer be able to shop on Amazon's USA site as the company shifts focus to its local offering.

eBay also stated its case against the Bill which applied GST to overseas sales.

As a result, Amazon said Australian shoppers wanting to use its global platforms will instead be directed to its smaller Australian site, which offers much less for sale.

Australian Amazon customers will soon no longer be able to buy from Amazon US.

"We have had to assess the workability of the legislation as a global business with multiple worldwide sites", an Amazon spokesperson said.

In a statement issued to the ABC, Amazon said it regretted the move and the inconvenience to customers accustomed to visiting Amazon's global online stores.

Some 4.6 million Australians visited Amazon's U.S. site in November 2017, the month before its Australian website went live, according to consumer metrics company Nielsen.

Ms. Wong, the visually impaired Amazon customer, said the company's main site offered products she just couldn't get from Australian retailers, including many created to help visually impaired people like her.

A spokesperson for Treasurer Scott Morrison said the new GST regulations "level the playing field" for Australian businesses.
