Body of man who disappeared during flooding in Maryland found

Volunteers and crews with trained dogs had been methodically hunting for 39-year-old Eddison Hermond who disappeared Sunday afternoon after torrential rains that prompted destructive flash flooding in historic Ellicott City for the second time in less than two years.

Lopez, who was attending a birthday party with Hermond and her husband, said Hermond left the party to help a woman rescue her cat.

"In a normal heavy rain event, you wouldn't see this amount of flooding, where you see cars floating down the road", Muccilli said.

"He was trying to save me", Bowman told The Baltimore Sun.

Authorities on Tuesday are advising residents to stay away from the affected area.

The floodwaters have turned the streets of Ellicott City into muddy rivers, sweeping away cars and ripping small buildings from their foundations.

"This is where we're one Howard again, and we'll be one Ellicott City", he said.

Hermond and his friends went to help, and that's when, they said, he was pulled under and didn't resurface, Gardner added.

Ellicott City sits along the west bank of the Patapsco River about 20 kilometers west of Baltimore and is prone to flooding. Howard County Fire and EMS urged residents to evacuate downtown or move to higher ground while rescue teams swarmed the area. Cars were swept away in the torrent, and a number of buildings damaged.
