The Mueller team also offered to give U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson a "more detailed presentation of the investigation" and the relevant records in private, though the special counsel said he believed that lawsuit could be resolved based just on the public record.

The president aggressively shot back at critics who have slammed his decision to cancel the planned North Korea summit, as well as his use of the term "animals" when referring to violent gangs entering the US illegally, a term the White House has consistently defended.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders had originally said that no one from the White House would attend the briefing, at which the investigation into Trump's campaign will be discussed.

In a series of tweets, Trump indicated that he is more than convinced that the then Barack Obama administration placed a spy on his presidential campaign.

And in a surprise development, the president's new lawyer handling the Russian Federation investigation, Emmet Flood, attended and participated in at least part of the briefings as did White House chief of staff John Kelly, sources confirmed to ABC News.

FBI Director Christopher Wray, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, held two unusual classified briefings for senior lawmakers of both parties in the wake of the Republican president's claim.

A secret FBI source met with Trump campaign officials several times during the 2016 campaign, according to the newspapers, as part of the FBI's investigation into Russian interference with the election.

Nunes has said the request relates to classified information relevant to his ongoing investigation into allegations of political bias at the Justice Department related to the Russian Federation investigation, but it was unclear to both Republicans and Democrats Thursday what information the group will learn about the alleged informant.

Flood and White House chief of staff John Kelly attended the start of the briefings before leaving.

Briefers from the Justice Department brought documents with them to the Gang of Eight meeting, but lawmakers did not ask to see them, two people briefed on the matter said. He previously had said that a decision would not be made about an interview until after Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a meeting the president cancelled Thursday but the White House is open to reviving. The invite list evolved up until hours before the meeting - a reflection of the partisan distrust and the political wrangling.

Following an emergency meeting, the Turkish central bank steeply raised a benchmark lending rate from 13.5% to 16.5% on Wednesday. Other countries that have experienced sharp drops in the value of their currencies include Brazil and Argentina.

Giuliani also said that learning about the confidential source is a prerequisite for any special counsel interview with the President.

"There are motives on behalf of the House Intelligence Committee - [Republican Chairman] Devin Nunes, who is trying to interfere with an ongoing active investigation and seems not concerned at all about blowing a source who has contributed to other investigations and has associates all around the world".

"Attacks on the Federal Bureau of Investigation and lying about its work will do lasting damage to our country", Comey tweeted.

Unsafe time when our country is led by those who will lie about anything, backed by those who will believe anything, based on information from media sources that will say anything.

On Thursday, two meetings were held with lawmakers to resolve issues around the documents. Ryan didn't attend that meeting.

I believe the President can make this compelling case to Kim Jong Un , who appears willing to move in this positive direction. Kelly said the Moon administration will be "very concerned about the possibility of backsliding into "fire and fury".

A second meeting, on Capitol Hill, was held with members of the "Gang of Eight", which includes the top leadership in the House and Senate plus the top Republicans and Democrats on the intelligence committees. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement that "I can not and will not comment on a classified session" and that "I look forward to the prompt completion of the intelligence committee's oversight work in this area".

"I think we win it", Giuliani said.

The intelligence grouping consists of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Pelosi, Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Richard Burr, top intelligence Democrat Mark Warner, Nunes and Schiff.

Mark Meadows, R-N.C., wrote on Twitter , "DOJ can't be trusted to investigate themselves-Congress needs the documents too. Senator Lindsey Graham says he does not want to interfere with Mueller's investigation but he does have his concerns.
