9 killed in police firing, Tamil Nadu CM announces ex-gratia

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday termed the deaths of several people in police firing during protests against the Sterlite copper plant in Tamil Nadu a "brutal example of state sponsored terrorism".

The district has been witnessing several protests by locals and others against the Sterlite Copper plant and its proposed expansion. Several protestors have been injured in the demonstrations, The Hindu reported.

About 20,000 people gathered at the protest site today and stormed the district collector's office, vandalising government property.

Some senior officials have also been despatched from Chennai to the strife-torn town to assess the situation and take measures to restore calm, sources said.

The agitators pelted stones and damaged police vehicles after they were prevented from marching towards the plant. 'Nine people have been confirmed dead, ' said police official Kapil Kumar Saratkar.
