Senate panel approves Central Intelligence Agency nominee Haspel despite torture background

The Senate Intelligence Committee voted Wednesday to advance the nomination of Gina Haspel to be CIA director, setting up a confirmation vote in the full Senate that Haspel is poised to win.

The 10-5 vote behind closed doors clears the way for Haspel to receive a confirmation vote of the full Senate as early as this week.

Panel Chairman Richard Burr, though, called Haspel "the most qualified person" to lead the agency. "She has acted morally, ethically, and legally, over a distinguished 30-year career and is the right person to lead the Agency into an uncertain and challenging future".

Among Democrats supporting Haspel were several up for re-election this fall in states where Trump is popular, including Sen.

Activists say Haspel's expected appointment sends message that in United States, "you can make a career while you torture people".

Delay in Bhushan Steel acquisition may lead to governance issues
The shares of the company closed at ₹ 336.65 a scrip on the BSE , up 0.87 per cent from the previous close. The company said that the agreement for the joint venture is expected to be signed in the current quarter.

Six Democrats, however, were heartened by her pledge to never restart harsh interrogation programs, even if Trump requested.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., tweeted last week she opposes Haspel's appointment, and will vote against it when it comes before the whole Senate.

Flake says he still has questions about Haspel's role in the destruction of the tapes. But she reiterated her opposition to the practice in a letter sent earlier this week to the committee's senior Democrat, Mark Warner, persuading him to endorse her. Warner's support was matched by one other unnamed Democrat in the secret vote, ensuring the closely divided Senate will also be able to pass Haspel through in a vote expected as early as this week.

"Her being the first female director does not make a difference", Flaherty said. In addition, she drafted a 2005 memo ordering the destruction of videotapes of torture sessions at the Thailand "black site" in the face of demands that the evidence be turned over to congressional investigators.

Most in the Democratic caucus are expected to vote against Haspel - with Sen.

House members don't have a vote on confirmations, but Representative Jim Banks (R-3rd) praises Haspel's experience as an agency veteran, and says he doesn't share concerns about her part in the "extraordinary rendition" program.

American bourgeois "democracy" has been reduced, behind the threadbare trappings of parliamentary procedures, to a dictatorship run by a military/intelligence/industrial apparatus that operates outside of any legal restraints. "I believe that she will be a strong advocate for the Agency's workforce, and an independent voice who can and will stand up on behalf of our nation's intelligence community". "Ms. Haspel's apparently clear path of confirmation", it wrote, "essentially ends a cycle of debate about the agency's use of torture after the September 11 attacks..."

Staberock also said that when Haspel goes around the world, she will have "zero authority" to speak against abuse and torture in other countries.

"Gina Haspel is one step closer to leading our fearless men and women at the Central Intelligence Agency".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the nomination was not just about Haspel, but the USA grappling with its past mistakes.
