Teacher accused of drowning raccoons during class

An agriculture teacher in Florida allegedly drowned two raccoons and an opossum with help from students, school officials and parents said.

The mother of the student who shot the video, both who wish to remain anonymous, said to a reporter at WKMG-TV, "It made me sick". The student told the station a previous class had filled a trashcan with water, and that the students and teacher drowned the trapped raccoons in it.

In the clip, students can be seen standing around a black trashcan filled with water.

"It made me sick". 'It made me sick to my stomach'. "It's bad. It still does make me sick to my stomach", the mother said of the drownings. "They should have trapped the animal and had somebody take them and relocate the animals", the mother commented.

"My friend said that the class before that, they were [putting] the water in the buckets", the student said, adding that some of her classmates had nightmares following the ordeal.

The teacher was reported to have killed the raccoons because they had eaten a chicken that the students had raised.

Her son told her the agriculture teacher threatened anyone who recorded or took pictures of the incident would be given a referral. In addition to holding down the drowning raccoons, the students and their instructor would use water hoses to spray the raccoons and opossum in the face in an effort to speed the drowning process.

Marion County Public Schools told Newsweek that the school district is investigating the incident and said the teacher involved has been placed on paid leave as of Tuesday afternoon, as per "standard procedure any time an employee is accused".

The teacher has worked at Forest High School since 2006.

'The district is determining the status of the teacher at this moment'.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission launched an investigation after parents notified the agency, according to FOX51. The findings will then be presented to the state attorney's office, WKMG reports.

On Facebook, the alumni group of the Forest High School Future Farmers of America posted a statement defending Brewton, saying he was a man "who would give everything" to make sure students were taken care of.
