Soros NGO to close Hungary office over law targeting its efforts

Soros NGO to close Hungary office over law targeting its efforts

Under intense political pressure and the threat of legal sanctions, George Soros's Open Society Foundations said on Tuesday that it had become impossible to work in Hungary, whose Prime Minister has blamed Soros for the country's problems, and that the foundations would move their operations to Berlin.

The bill would allow the interior minister to ban any NGOs active in the immigration field deemed to pose a "national security risk".

The pro-democracy group said it was pulling out a day after the right-wing government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced it would tighten restrictions on non-governmental organizations, under a law dubbed the "Stop Soros " bill.

Rights groups in Hungary and overseas have denounced the proposals as a way of cracking down on groups critical of the government.

Orban, who won a landslide election victory last month, has repeatedly accused Soros and his organization of encouraging migrants and undermining the national culture.

George Soros' Open Society Foundations operates more than 40 offices around the world.

The "Stop Soros" package was "one of the most important questions of the election, Hungarians voted for it... what we said we would do, we will do", Orban said Monday on a visit to Warsaw.

OSF's Gaspard said the Hungarian government had funneled more than 100 million euros ($119m) in public funds into its "hate campaign" in order to "spread lies about the Foundations and their partners", he said.

A loose-knit group of George Soros-financed foundations is leaving Hungary as the government's nationalist leader continues cracking down on the billionaire's influence in the country.

The campaign was criticized in the Hungarian Jewish community as having anti-Semitic overtones.
