Hawaii volcano warning as poisonous gas spews from lava

Dozens of homes have been destroyed since eruptions began 10 days ago and officials have ordered the evacuations of almost 2,000 residents in the lower Puna district of the Big Island, home to around 187,000 people. An 18th fissure also opened over the weekend, but since no lava was seen spewing from it, the authorities only documented the 17 active fissures. "Communities downslope of these fissures could be at risk from lava inundation", says the USGS.

The volcano began erupting May 3.

The Hawaii National Guard is preparing to evacuate 2,000 people living on the eastern flank of the Kilauea volcano if lava flow cuts access to their homes.

Residents near Hawaii's Kilauea volcano faced warnings on Monday that more lava-spewing fissures could open near their homes and that the volcano's summit may be getting ready for an explosion that could scatter ash and debris for miles.

Officials said they may need to order an evacuation of the entire area if a local highway is cut off. Lava has destroyed more than 40 structures, including two dozen homes.

"It's down to one gravel road, that's what also pushed us over the edge", said Rob Guzman, who with his husband Bob Kirk chose to leave their home in the Kalapana Seaview Estates subdivision around 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of Leilani Estates.

Hawaii County Civil Defense issued an emergency cellphone alert after the fissure was discovered early Sunday morning.

Cracks along the highway have worsened in the last few days, with authorities fearing even more fissures could form.

"The appearance of the fissures in the past couple of days does not change the overall picture or concern", USGS scientist Steve Brantley said.

One of the newest fissures, a 1,000-foot (300-meter) groove with smoke pouring out both ends, was sending a narrow lava flow toward the ocean two miles away, Civil Defense officials said on Monday.

In this May 13, 2018 photo released by the U.S. Geological Survey, gases rise from a fissure near Pahoa, Hawaii. Last week, plant workers removed the 50,000 gallons of pentane, a highly-flammable chemical stored at the site, as a precaution.

Geologists have warned that Kilauea's summit could have an explosive steam eruption that would hurl boulders and ash miles into the sky.
