Giuliani: Trump repaid Cohen $130K for payment to porn star

Trump's legal team may have wished to pre-empt news of the payment from coming out through leaks from the federal prosecutors' office in NY to the mainstream media.

Daniels has sued Trump and Cohen to be released from the non-disclosure agreement, saying it was invalid because Trump never signed it.

Trump has historically claimed that he had no knowledge of the $130,000 payment to Daniels.

The revelation from Giuliani came as Cohen was under escalating legal pressure.

"That was money that was paid by his lawyer" to Daniels, Giuliani told host Sean Hannity.

The iPhone maker reported $3.89 earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, beating analysts' consensus estimates of $3.82 by $0.07. Following the transaction, the senior vice president now owns 66,191 shares in the company, valued at $11,194,221.92.

"I was talking about the $130,000 payment, the settlement payment, which is a very regular thing for lawyers to do", Giulani told Hannity.

"That money was not campaign money, sorry", Giuliani added. "They funnelled through a law firm and the president repaid it", Giuliani said.

"He did know about the general arrangement that Michael would take care of things like this", he said when he revealed President Trump's agreement with Cohen. Asked why Cohen made the payment, Trump said: "You'll have to ask Michael Cohen".

She was paid $130,000 by Cohen before the 2016 election to keep quiet about the allegations.

It's unclear why Giuliani, who is representing Trump in his dealings with special counsel Robert Mueller, spoke out about the Daniels matter in the first place.

Ms Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti has said he is holding back further details of the alleged affair, including the contents of a data disc he tweeted a picture of last week, for strategic reasons.

Cohen's payment to the president's accuser in the weeks leading up to the presidential election could be cast as an illegal contribution but not if he were acting on the president's behest and with his money. "I hope that your viewers and I hope that the American people upon hearing this and watching that clip, they should be outraged".

Trump has told reporters that he was not aware of the payment and that he didn't know where Cohen had gotten the money.

By disclosing Trump's own financial involvement in the hush money, Giuliani and the president might be making the calculation that pain today is merited to minimize even greater grief further down the line.White House aides have been seriously concerned about the fallout of the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid in April on the premises of Cohen's law firm.

Cohen had said previously: "Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly".
