Russian Trolls Increased '2000 Percent' After Syria Attack, Pentagon Says

In a statement released early Saturday morning, Putin denounced the strikes as an "act of aggression" that would have a "destructive influence on the entire system of worldwide relations".

Those comments were more measured than the taunting tweets about potential missile strikes Trump sent early in the week, which were the antithesis of how a president should proceed when considering use of force. Russian Federation deployed the operation during the 2016 US elections.

Fortunately, however, Trump did appear to carefully and smartly avoid attacking Russian forces on the ground in Syria.

Support from elsewhere in Europe was more muted, with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni saying his country didn't provide its usual logistical support to western military operations in the eastern Mediterranean.

But one U.S. official said there could be more air strikes if the intelligence indicates Assad has not stopped manufacturing, importing, storing or using chemical weapons.

On Friday night, Mr. Trump said the "prepared to sustain this response" until Syrian President Bashar Assad halts his believed use of chemical weapons.

Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said the USA strikes on Syria "would not be left without consequences".

"We consistently oppose the use of force in worldwide relations, and advocate respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries", Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Saturday.

"China urges all to resolve the issue through dialogue and consultation", Hua said. Washington says it has confirmed that chlorine gas was used, and has unconfirmed suspicion that nerve agents may also have been used. Trudeau added that Canada would continue to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria and that those responsible for the recent attacks "must be brought to justice". Yet he made no mention of a possible Russian military response.

The U.S. president was also said to be upset over perceived Russian inaction over Syria using the weapons.

Earlier in the day, the United Kingdom, the United States and France launched airstrikes at Syria over reports of a chemical attack in the city of Douma.

In 2013, he said, "we should stay the hell out of Syria" and "Let the Arab League take care of Syria". "The matter should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations and on the basis of the principles of the UN Charter and in accordance with the worldwide law", it said.

Friday's military campaign targeted research facilities that are thought to have been involved in the production of chemical weapons. Pentagon officials said the assault pummeled, but did not eliminate the Syrian program.

State media published images of a cloud of reddish smoke hanging over the capital and said that air defences were activated to block the attack. "This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime", he added.

Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged member states to "show restraint in these unsafe circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate matters and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people".

In a sign of mounting regional tensions, seven Iranians were killed in an air strike on a Syrian military base on Monday, which Iran said was carried out by Israel.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called the strikes a "one-time shot" with no additional military action planned for now.
