The South African government has congratulated Team South Africa for flying the flag high at the current Commonwealth Games being held in Australia. The games, now in their seventh day, have seen South Africa collect nine gold medals along with six silver and six bronze medals in the teams' overall tally of 21 medals.

Eight of Cameroon's 24 competing athletes have gone missing over the course of three days, leaving in three groups.

Nso said the first three athletes left on Sunday night, with two others declared missing on Monday and a further three leaving the village on Tuesday night.

It's not the first time Australia has dealt with cases of missing worldwide athletes, mostly from African nations, suspected of fleeing in a bid to seek asylum.

The missing boxers are Simplice Fotsala, Arsene Fokou, Christian Ndzie Tchoyi, Ulrich Yombo, and Christelle Ndiang.

She started her surge with 250 meters to go and rounded the leaders with 200 remaining, extending her lead in the home stretch and then flexing her biceps in a bodybuilding pose after crossing the line.

Federation chief executive David Grevemberg said that the Cameroonian athletes are within their visas and "have the right to travel freely".

Team coordinator Simon Molombe admits that he is not sure they will be coming back.

At London 2012, seven Cameroon athletes disappeared during the Olympics.

A spokesman for the Australian Border Force said the federal government was working closely with the Games organising committee and global stakeholders to ensure officials and athletes were aware of their visa responsibilities.

"We are disappointed to hear that a total of eight athletes from the Cameroonian team left the Athletes' Village without notice", the CGF said in a statement.

Cameroon officials on Wednesday made a decision to fly 14 athletes, including the entire 12-man basketball team, home immediately after they had completed their competitions.

It is not the first time competitors have gone missing at worldwide events.
