Younkers will close at mall, 93 to lose jobs

Bon-Ton Stores Inc. said it is not announcing any more store closings despite a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice that it has put out.

Younkers stores in Eau Claire, Marshfield and Green Bay are also slated to close. The timetable was not specified.

Layoffs could begin as soon as June 5, and 93 Eau Claire employees will lose their jobs, according to a notice filed with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

The WARN notice mentioned the Bon-Ton on Schoenersville Road in Bethlehem and the distribution center in Whitehall as sites for potential layoffs of 89 and 51 employees, respectively.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early February.

In Madison, the Boston Stores are main anchors of the malls that draw shoppers from southern and central Wisconsin, northern IL and northeastern Iowa.

"We are encouraged by the interest in Bon-Ton and we hope that jobs will be preserved through a sale process", the statement said.

In February, the company filed for Chapter 11 voluntary bankruptcy protection.

The Madison stores are located at East and West Towne Malls. The only store in the Milwaukee area that is slated to close is the Boston Store clearance store on South 27th Street in Milwaukee. That includes $1.3 million for replacing and repairing the department store roof, $400,000 for repaving the parking lot and additional repairs, including the roof drainage system, totaling $300,000. In late January, Bon-Ton announced the closure of 42 locations.

The bid for Bon-Ton offers a path for the retailer to survive, according to sources in the report. "This does not bode well for Bon-Ton's continuing operations".
