Trump Orders US National Guard to 'Protect Mexico Border'

"Until we can have a wall and proper security we're going to be guarding our border with the military", Mr Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday, lamenting what he called "horrible" USA laws that left the southern border poorly protected.

Experts say the caravan and a rising number of border-crossings in the U.S.is the "inevitable" result of Republicans, Democrats, and the Trump administration's pushing for an amnesty for illegal aliens over the last six months.

Trump plans to sign a proclamation Wednesday directing the Defense Department and Homeland Security Department to work with governors to deploy National Guard units to the border, Nielsen said.

"The threat is real", Nielsen said at an afternoon briefing, adding that Trump was signing a proclamation to put the deployment into effect.

"I think looking at past numbers should be indicative, but it really depends on the very specific mission sets that they'll provide", Nielsen said.

In an emailed response to Cronkite News, CBP in Arizona referenced an agency-wide statement that CBP "has a decades-long relationship working with the National Guard" and that the National Guard will offer CBP "logistical support".

The senators condemn the "baseless and offensive comments about Mexico and Mexicans", reject efforts to militarize the countries' shared border and ask the U.S. Congress to insist the president deal with Mexico "on the basis of respect and collaboration".

The order comes one day after Trump made the surprise announcement that the US will be "guarding our border with the military" until his "big, handsome wall" is one day built.

The North Carolina National Guard contains many different specialties, including troops focused on engineering, airlifts and logistics.

After Nielsen spoke, a senior administration official said, "We expect personnel to be on the border quickly but at this time we don't have a date, but that will be coming soon".

The Mexican foreign ministry said Nielsen told Mexico's top diplomat that troops deployed to the border "will not carry arms or carry out migration or customs control activities".

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey tweeted, "Arizona welcomes the deployment of National Guard to the border".

The president has the legal authority to do this, as long as governors of border states acquiesce - and agree to foot the bill. Details were not released on when the guardsmen will be deployed, what duties they will be assigned and how the deployment will be paid for.

The "caravans" mentioned by Brooks refer to the 1,500 Central Americans who are set to seek asylum in the USA, traveling through Guatemala and Mexico up to the southern border.

President Donald Trump is promising "strong action today" on immigration.

The announcement came after days of Trump's public fuming over the immigration policy and border security as a result of what he sees "weak" border laws.

Since the weekend, Trump has been tweeting and talking about border security following reports that more than 1,000 Central Americans, most from Honduras, are traveling north toward the USA southern border with the help of Pueblo Sin Fronteras, a group that has organized several similar "refugee caravans" in recent years. On Sunday, he launched a Twitter offensive against undocumented immigrants, blaming Mexico and the Obama-era program that allows people who entered the United States illegally as children to stay (known as DACA) for allegedly funneling them into the US.
