Israel to send African migrants to West under new United Nations deal

Netanyahu's office said the "unprecedented understandings" would be implemented in three stages over five years, with much of those remaining in Israel integrated and granted official status.

The agreement "will allow for a larger number of immigrants to leave Israel than the previous plan, and [this will be done] under the auspices of the United Nations and the global community", according to an announcement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, cited by Haaretz.

Naftali Bennett, leader of the Israeli far-right party Jewish Home - a key member of Netanyahu's coalition government - said on Twitter that the agreement would encourage more people to enter the country illegally, and he called on Netanyahu to overturn it.

"I've made a decision to suspend implementation of this accord and to rethink the terms of the accord", Netanyahu wrote on his Facebook page, saying his move was in response to criticism of the deal. Only 10 Eritreans and one Sudanese out of over 35,000-40,000 migrants have been recognized as refugees in Israel since 2009, according to the UN.

The migrants' presence in Israel has become a political issue, with Netanyahu referring to them as "not refugees but illegal infiltrators".

VK Singh in Iraq; bodies of 39 Indians to be brought today
He will then fly to Patna and Kolkata to handover the mortal remains of those who belong to those states, said sources. It may take 8-10 days (to bring back the bodies)", Singh said outside Parliament.

A group of residents of southern Tel Aviv, where numerous migrants have settled, immediately denounced the new plan in a statement, calling it "a shame for the state of Israel".

It also ends the possibility that many would be forcibly deported to an unnamed African country, widely believed to be Uganda or Rwanda.

Canada, Italy and Germany are yet to officially confirm their participation in the agreement.

Other migrants, many of whom are seeking asylum, will be allowed to remain in Israel.

A spokesman for the German Interior Ministry said he was unaware of any plans to resettle African migrants from Israel to Germany.

The decision in January to offer the migrants a cash lump-sum and a plane ticket to leave Israel voluntarily or otherwise face forced expulsion was controversial in Israel.

According to interior ministry figures, there are now some 42,000 African migrants in Israel, half of them children, women or men with families, who are not facing immediate deportation.

The Africans, almost all from dictatorial Eritrea and war-torn Sudan, say they fled for their lives and face renewed danger if they return.

Netanyahu said in his remarks on Monday that he had to abandon the earlier plan because the option of sending them to a third country "no longer exists". At immigration hearings, migrants were told they could choose to go to Rwanda or Uganda.
