SpaceX launches 10 satellites into orbit on Falcon 9 rocket

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket lifted off at 7:13:51 a.m. PDT (10:13:51 a.m. EDT; 1413:51 GMT) from Space Launch Complex 4-East at Vandenberg. Pacific Time from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The booster had flown once before on an October 2017 mission, and SpaceX will reportedly discard some of its older boosters as it gears up to debut an upgraded version of the Falcon 9, called Block 5.

The Payload fairing rests on the top of the rocket, and it acts as a protection for the satellites during any launch. The GPS-guided parafoils meant to slow it down grew tangled as it descended back toward earth, causing the cone to crash into the water at a high rate of speed, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet.

The boat will attempt to catch one half of the nose cone.

France's ex-president Sarkozy to face a corruption trial
The former president, 63, can appeal the order, and no potential trial date has been set. Sarkozy has been denying all the accusations being leveled against him.

SpaceX will not attempt to make another recovery of the rocket's first stage after today's launch. To do that, Iridium has bought eight Falcon 9 launches for a total of $536 million. Mr. Steven will then try to grab one half of the fairing before it hits the ocean.

Recovering and reusing a fairing has never been done by any company or government. The FCC said it would have to fly 50% of the constellation by 2024, but that it would reconsider delays in the years ahead.

The newest satellites have communicated with ground controllers and will undergo testing before being declared operational, Iridium representatives said. SpaceX has signed on to deliver 75 Iridium satellites to orbit in total. The Federal Communications Commission gives satellite operators six years to put most of their constellation into operation, in order to prevent companies from stockpiling unused radio spectrum. Space.com has reached out to SpaceX and NOAA for clarification.

Embiid to have surgery in big blow for 76ers
Embiid is averaging 22.9 points, 11 boards and 1.8 blocks per game in 2018, leading the team in all three categories. Embiid was wobbly heading off the court but the Sixers announced the big man suffered a simple facial contusion.

Friday's launch is one of two missions in four days for SpaceX.

Thanks to SpaceX's efforts to reuse hardware, its Falcon 9 rocket is drastically cheaper than competing rockets - and the customers keep lining up. The company is scheduled to launch a cargo mission to the International Space Station at 1:30 p.m. Monday from Cape Canaveral. Dragon's first manned test flight is expected to take place as early as 2018, according to SpaceX.
