Waymo, Jaguar Land Rover form autonomous driving partnership

Waymo said it will fit its technology to the electric I-Pace vehicles and start testing them later this year, although it doesn't expect to use them to carry civilians until 2020.

"With this partnership, we can offer our self-driving service to many communities across the country with vehicles that are safe, quiet and eco-friendly. Our riders' safety is the overwhelming priority for all of us at Waymo", Krafcik said.

Despite the jubilant tone set by the Jaguar Land Rover and Waymo executives, there was a more somber tone underlying the NY news conference.

Professor Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover's chief executive officer, said: "With the Jaguar I-PACE we have a world-beating auto that's captured the imagination of customers around the world".

Autonomous vehicle company Waymo is about to gain another 20,000 electric cars to its fleet thanks to a new partnership with Jaguar. Krafcik boasts that Waymo has put its self-driving technology through 5 million miles of testing on public roads, in addition to 5 billion miles of computer simulation models and some 20,000 different tests on private proving grounds.

They have announced their plans to purchase up to 20,000 electric cars from Jaguar Land Rover and furnish them with new equipment, including radars, camera, and sensors. The event starts at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET, and the press conference will be followed with a Q&A from Waymo CEO John Krafcik.

Krafcik's confidence lies, especially, in Waymo's software.

This news comes almost a week after a driverless vehicle operated by Uber struck and killed a woman crossing the street in Tempe, Arizona. Waymo initially equipped about 600 Pacifica minivans with its self-driving technology before negotiating to buy "thousands" more of the vehicles.

Arizona's governor suspended testing by Uber on Monday.

In a previous report, Ars Technica dubbed Waymo's self-driving software as the best in the world, with the publication taking particular note of the company's several layers of redundancies, including redundant controls for its cars' brakes, steering, and power supply. "Our technology has gone through what we regard as the toughest driving test in the world".
