Trump Reportedly Pushing For Military To Pony Up For Border Wall

Still feeling spurned by the paltry $1.6 billion allotted for his border wall in last week's funding bill, President Donald Trump is now urging the military to pay for the project, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. In the same tweet, he talked about how building the border wall is a matter of National Defense, "Build WALL through M!" he exclaimed.

"We can't allow Donald Trump to steal already-limited resources from our troops to fund a pointless border wall that will serve little other objective than to satisfy his own fragile ego", Rep. Gallego wrote in a statement Wednesday, per The Hill.

After the spending bill passed Congress, Trump on Friday expressed his displeasure the wall was not "fully funded" and threatened a veto.

The White House says Trump still has plans to look at potential ways for Mexico to pay for the wall, despite Mexico saying that's not going to happen. During his campaign, he stated, "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best".

During a White House press briefing on Tuesday, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to comment about the money rumored to be coming from the military for the border wall.

Brent and WTI, in contrast, were down by that time, weighed down by concerns over a looming US trade dispute with China . Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Fox News that he's optimistic the USA can reach a truce with China on trade.

Trump appears to have also started floating the idea for military funding for the wall publicly.

Trump allegedly proposed the idea in a private meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan while reviewing the bill, which did not contain any funding for the wall despite previous claims by the president.

CBS's Paula Reid says the President's signature campaign promise could be being paid by Americans. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the idea, and it's unclear whether it has gained any serious traction.

So far, government funds have only been allocated to fencing along the border, but no new wall is now being built.

It sounds unlikely that the president will make any real progress on his border wall during his current term.

Some people close to the president have also suggested creating a GoFundMe campaign that Trump could use to raise money from the public to fund construction.

However, no new wall is now being built.

"But right now (Trump) doesn't have the authority to deploy troops to the southern border except under very special limitations", Maginnis advises.

"I can't get into the specifics of that at this point, but I can tell you that the continuation of building the wall is ongoing, and we're going to continue moving forward in that process", Sanders told reporters.
