Apple introduces new $329USD iPad with Apple Pencil support

Apple is rolling out a new educational app and giving away extra online storage to teachers and students in an attempt to reclaim some of the ground that it has lost in US classrooms. The total cost of the iPad and Apple Pencil for educators and students will be $388.

Here's the catch: it's only available for schools.

Tablets are used by many schools across the world to provide children with the means to watch educational videos, participate in quizzes and assigned work and to shoot and edit footage for projects.

U.S. stocks sharply higher; Dow up more than 400 points
Microsoft was the biggest gainer in the 30-company Dow and the Standard & Poor's 500 index, climbing almost 8 per cent. The Dow surged 669 points - its third-biggest point gain in history - and had its best day in two and a half years.

In addition, Logitech is also announcing the Rugged Combo 2 case specifically designed for the new iPad.

The new version for use in classroom - starting at $329 - is seen as an attempt to compete with similar tablets from Google and Microsoft.

The company unveiled its latest iPad Tuesday in a Chicago high school to signal a renewed emphasis on education. The people who will ultimately buy the new iPad and buy into its ecosystem are the same people who will be most excited by the $299 price: That would be teachers and the school districts that control their budgets.

Joswiak really pushed the idea of Apple's iWork, creative apps such as moviemaking apps, and augmented reality apps as differentiators between the iPad and Chromebooks. Apple's products have been losing ground in USA classrooms to Google and Microsoft during the past few years.

The 9.7in iPad has been upgraded to use Apple's A10 Fusion SoC and will sport a new Retina touchscreen that supports Pencil, the stylus pointer Apple had previously only offered as part of the more expensive iPad Pro line. The only new thing is the support for Apple Pencil. "It is available to order today and will start shipping to customers and arriving in stores this week", said Apple's Greg Jowiak. There's an 8-megapixel camera on the back and an HD FaceTime camera on the front, and Apple claims the iPad is good for 10 hours of battery life. The company is additionally bringing its Classroom service to the Mac and introducing a new Schoolwork app that helps teachers share assignments, documents, links, or anything with students. If your app already uses a student account to enable certain features, ClassKit does not associate that account with the Managed Apple ID that the student uses.

"Our place at the intersection of technology and the liberal arts makes it possible for us to create powerful products and tools that amplify learning and creativity", said Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, at an event in the auditorium of Lane Technical College Prep High School on Chicago's North Side. The new device is created to take on Google's Chromebooks in the classroom, but will no doubt find an appreciative audience outside of the education system. Hence the need for Apple to hold an education-focused event.
