Stormy protest in Barcelona after ex-Catalan leader arrested

Carles Puigdemont, the former president of Catalonia, has been detained by German police after crossing the border from Denmark, reports the BBC. The charges he faces in Spain could result in 30 years in prison.

Note that on October 1 in Catalonia, a referendum on independence was held.

The detention threatens to worsen the Catalan crisis which flared past year when the region made a symbolic declaration of independence, prompting Madrid to take direct rule.

Albert Rivera, the head of Ciudadanos, a pro-Spain party which won the most votes in Catalan elections in December, welcomed Puigdemont's detention.

Puigdemont was removed from office at the end of October and fled to Belgium to avoid sedition and rebellion charges, while Madrid dissolved Catalonia's government.

He has been resident in self-imposed banishment in Belgium since the independence declaration of Catalonia from Spain.

A Spanish police official told the AP under customary condition of anonymity that Spain's National Center for Intelligence and police agents from its worldwide cooperation division helped German police to make the arrest. The European arrest warrant system in place since 2004 makes it easier for EU countries to demand the extradition from other EU states of people wanted for crimes, and removes political decision-making from the process.EU countries issue thousands of such warrants each year. When he arrived, Spanish courts had activated a European arrest warrant, but it was later deactivated.

Puigdemont's lawyer Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas, added on Twitter that he was picked up by German police as he was travelling back to Belgium to "present himself, as always, at the disposal of Belgian courts".

Police in the northern German city of Kiel said Puigdemont was taken in by officers at 11:19 am local time while his vehicle travelled south. That ruling reactivated Puigdemont's arrest warrant, catching him off-guard while giving a university lecture.

After a referendum in Catalonia, the central government in Madrid voided the Catalan regional government, imposed direct rule and called new elections.

Police did not say exactly where Puigdemont was being held.

Police in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein said highway police arrested Mr Puigdemont on Sunday morning near the A7 main road that leads from Denmark into Germany.
