JNU protest: NCW orders probe, police apologise to media

A group of journalists belonging to various media organisations on Saturday protested outside the Delhi Police Headquarters demanding strict action against the police personnel involved in assaulting and molesting two journalists on Friday.

The news agency however, did not mention the journalist's name.

One of the protesting journalists who didn't wanted to be named said, "What happened yesterday was not only shocking but scary".

The JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTU) and students on Friday marched to demand suspension of Professor Atul Johri, who has been accused of sexual harassment by eight students.

The "Padyatra", which started at the varsitys campus, was organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA).

Several students posted videos on social media which showed police personnel assaulting protestors and using water canons indiscriminately. Protesters kept their cameras on ground as mark of protest. The journalist also alleged that even after identifying herself as a journalist, she was pushed by him while being groped on the chest.

Earlier today, journalists staged a dharna outside Delhi Police Headquarters in protest against alleged molestation of a woman journalist and manhandling of another journalist by police. Journalists in the line of duty have occasionally been roughed up by the police in the past also.

Delhi Police spokesman Madhur Verma issued a statement, saying "Yesterday's incident was a very unfortunate one. I told them I am from the media, but they were just pulling me away", said the photographer.

Meanwhile, Smith confessed it was a well-thought-of "deliberate" plan from the "leadership group" to tamper with the ball. It is not in the spirit of the game, not in line with my integrity, the team's integrity.

No FIR has been registered against the errant cops.

Later, Verma tendered "deepest apologies to the media".

"We have ordered a probe and sent a team to meet the police officials and we will further pursue the matter on Monday", NCW acting chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

He added, "We have taken strong cognizance of the matter and an inquiry has been ordered".
