Marcus Smart Out Indefinitely With A Torn Tendon In His Right Thumb

The Boston Celtics will not have guard Marcus Smart in the lineup for quite some time after he reportedly tore a tendon in his thumb.

The Celtics have succeeded this season despite some notable injuries. Letting the injury heal naturally would likely take a month or so, while surgery would involve a three-month timetable. Gordon Hayward only played five minutes in the first game before a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia ended his season. According to a league source, the C's have no idea about Smart's probability of return. "[They're] waiting for that second opinion", the source said.

Team officials said Irving, who had seven points in 16 minutes against in, had left knee soreness and was not returning.

Smart's right hand was later put in a cast, and he expressed confidence that "it will be all right".

It's been a tumultuous season for the impending restricted free agent, who was unable to reach agreement on a contract extension with the team last fall.

Himmelsbach reported the situation "doesn't look good" for Smart. Smart missed 11 games as a result.

Toshiro Muto, CEO of the 2020 Tokyo Games organizing committee, said his team had much to learn from the situation. Skier Adam Hall has swept to New Zealand's second medal at the Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang.

Surgery is considered a possibility for Smart, but the Celtics aren't sure yet what will be necessary.

Theis and Smart were both hurt in Sunday's game, with Smart's injury occurring when he dove to the floor. Theis suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee.
