London police probing death of Borovsky associate

Relations between Britain and Russian Federation have been strained since the murder in London of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 after drinking green tea laced with radioactive polonium-210.

Reports in British and Russian media say Glushkov, who was 68, was found dead at his home in New Malden, southwest London, by his family and friends. It did not identify him by name.

The London home of Russian exile Nikolai Glushkov, a close friend of Putin critic Boris Berezovsky, has been sealed off by police following Mr Glushkov's death.

A coroner concluded it was impossible to establish whether the oligarch was killed or committed suicide.

London's Metropolitan Police said counterterrorism detectives are leading the investigation "as a precaution because of associations that the man is believed to have had".

Mr Glushkov, 69, is the former deputy director of Russian state airline Aeroflot. Glushkov wasn't as fortunate; he served five years over money laundering and fraud, The Guardian reports, before following Berezovsky to England several years later.

Russian media reported that Glushkov was granted political asylum in Britain in 2010. In 2011, he gave evidence at the court case brought by Berezovsky against Kremlin-friendly oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Mr Berezovsky was found hanged in the bathroom of his Berkshire home in 2013 and an inquest recorded an open verdict.

Glushkov was a friend of Berezovsky and argued publicly that he believed the exiled tycoon had been murdered.
