Former Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal, who after joining the BJP today took a swipe at actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan, has been in the news several times in the past for making controversial comments, even in parliament.

"Shri Naresh Agarwal has joined Bhartiya Janata Party".

The SP nominated Jaya Bachchan as its only candidate and made a decision to extendd the remaining votes to BSP candidate Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

On March, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had announced Jaya Bachchan as its candidate for the only seat in the Upper House it is likely to win.

Mr Agarwal further said that his "community" (Baniya-Vaish) had "anyway" been big supporters of the BJP and would therefore be happy to see him in the BJP.

With 47 MLAs in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the Samajwadi Party could send just one candidate to the upper house and it chose Jaya Bachchan over Agarwal.

He expressed his affection for SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and his cousin Ram Gopal Yadav, saying he could never leave them. The state's ruling party has a surplus of 28 votes and if gets the support of Independents and gains through possible cross-voting, its ninth candidate could also get elected.
