Amid lull, Red Cross delivers aid to Syria's Ghouta

The government, backed in the war by Russian Federation and Iran, is seeking to crush the last major rebel enclave near the capital in a ferocious campaign that the aid agency Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) says has killed more than 1,000 people.

The Syrian army has captured 52 percent of Eastern Ghouta in recent days, as part of an ongoing wide-scale offensive to dislodge the rebels from that key area on the eastern rim of Damascus.

An aid convoy, which failed to deliver humanitarian supplies to Syria's besieged Eastern Ghouta last week due to violence, delivered "urgently needed" aid on Friday despite fighting which took place extremely close to the convoy, Anadolu Agency reports with a reference to the Red Cross said.

Sedky said earlier that the ICRC went into eastern Ghouta on Friday "after getting security guarantees from all parties to make sure no incident will happen during the presence of our team" there.

The delivery consists of supplies that were not offloaded during a mission to the enclave on Monday, which was cut short because of deteriorating security.

A United Nations official who entered eastern Ghouta earlier this week said civilians stuck inside the enclave - mostly women and children - would like to leave have nowhere to go and feel they can't exit safely from the designated checkpoints.

The onslaught has killed more than 1,000 people, the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Thursday.
