Amelia Earhart's remains found on Pacific island in 1940, study suggests

A working party found bones on the Pacific island of Nikumaroro in 1940-three years after Earhart disappeared, USA Today reports.

Upon initial investigation by a medical examiner called D. W. Hoodless, the bones were dismissed as nothing more than a castaway - who was most likely male.

Richard Jantz, an emeritus anthropology professor at the University of Tennessee, argues that bones are nearly certainly Amelia's.

If true, the findings would finally solve a mystery that has fascinated generations since Earhart disappeared while attempting to fly around the world in 1937. He determined that the bones were those of a stocky man, and the bones were later lost.

"This analysis reveals that Earhart is more similar to the Nikumaroro bones than 99 per cent of individuals in a large reference sample".

The details were published in a research article authored by Jantz, professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Tennessee, in the journal Forensic Anthropology on Wednesday.

For decades, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart has fascinated historians and researchers.

In a phone interview, Professor Jantz noted some artefacts found on the island also supported the possibility the bones came from Earhart.

The study and other evidence "point toward her rather strongly", Jantz said Thursday. Those measurements led a scientist in 1941 to conclude that they belong to a man.

But using photographs, seven bone measurements done by Hoodless and examination of her clothing, Jantz used the computer program to compare them to measurements of Earhart's bone lengths.

Amelia's disappearance has sparked multiple theories of what fate befell her, with journalist Mike Campbell believing she and navigator Fred Noonan were captured by the Japanese.

Jantz is basing his expert opinion on measurements of the bones-measurements that were taken in 1940.

Amelia Earhart, by far the most famous female aviator, has been inspiring adventurers since the 1930's.

Earhart's measurements - her height, weight, body build, limb lengths and proportions - were reconstructed by using information by her pilot's and driver's licenses, as well as numerous photos.

A new study claimed Amelia Earthart may have died on Gardner Island.

The expedition's officer ordered a more thorough search of the area, which resulted in the discovery of several other bones and part of what appeared to be a woman's shoe.

"What I would like people to know about this study is that it does not confirm the remains are hers - and that in fact there are no remains anymore", she told Gizmodo.

However, CNN debunked the gossip, providing evidence that suggested the photo was circulated two years before Earhart vanished.
