Generous South Africans are starting to dig into their own pockets to help promising triathlon competitor Mhlengi Gwala pay for the medical treatment he requires after a gruesome attack by chainsaw wielding criminals.

Jackson said Gwala told him that the attackers sawed into his right calf, damaging muscle, nerves and bone.

"They took the chainsaw, which they were not using electrically, but manually".

According to his athletic sponsor Sue de la Porte, Gwala offered his attackers his cell phone and cash but they just pinned him down and tried to saw off his leg. Three men reportedly ambushed Mhlengi Gwala and attempted to hack off both of his legs, TMZ reports.
