Ethiopia imposes six-month emergency rule

Ethiopia imposes six-month emergency rule

Addis Ababa - Ethiopian Defense Minister Siraj Fegessa on Saturday said a state of emergency imposed by Ethiopia after the prime minister resigned will last six months.

According to Fegessa, the ten-month state of emergency was effective in calming the violent demonstrations that rocked the East African country for much of 2016 and 2017.

State-affiliated Fana Broadcast Corporate also reported Siraj dismissing "as false rumours of military takeover of the government".

The previously imposed state of emergency, during its initial days, had imposed restrictions including curfew, social media blocks, and a ban on diplomats traveling more than 40 km outside the capital Addis Ababa without approval.

But she said her name remained on the charity's website because she wanted to show gratitude and support for what they try to do. Britain has threatened to stop funding overseas aid agencies if they don't learn the lessons from Oxfam's sex abuse scandal.

Mulatu Gemechu, deputy secretary of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, spoke a day after the surprise resignation of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, who said he was leaving office to smooth reforms.

We strongly disagree with the Ethiopian government's decision to impose a state of emergency that includes restrictions on fundamental rights such as assembly and expression.

Details of parts of the civilian constitution to be suspended will be announced at the end of the ministerial council's meeting, but it is likely to be not much different than the October 2016 nine month state of emergency, which was extended by additional four months.

Over the past two years, Ethiopia has been in political turmoil as people in the two largest regions of the country, accounting for more than 60 percent of the over 100 million people, have been holding incessant anti-government demonstrations.

Rights groups claimed people were beaten and subjected to arbitrary detentions under the previous emergency rule.

Announcing his resignation in a televised address on Thursday, Hailemariam Desalegn said he was stepping down to allow the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) to better implement political reforms. The government maintained those arrested were by mistake and people were released after what it described as "training".

"Peace and stability should be brought by the negotiation amongst people and the government".
