WhatsApp launches long-awaited digital payments service in India

After a year of speculation, WhatsApp seems to be testing its much-awaited UPI-based payments feature for select WhatsApp beta users on iOS and Android. The option for UPI-based payments shows up in the attachments segment next to Documents, Gallery, Audio, Location, Contact, etc.

After working on its development since a year ago, WhatsApp has introduced a beta version of its digital payment feature on Android and iOS in India. Hence, to send and receive money using WhatsApp Payments, all you have to do is link your bank account which is already linked to UPI.

Similar to other applications that leverage on the UPI based payments like PhonePe and Google Tez, WhatsApp will also require users to set up the payment service by linking their phone number. The National Payments Corporation of India has reportedly created this instant real-time payment system called UPI to facilitate the inter-bank transactions. Once this is done, the option to send payment is soon added and becomes available from the WhatsApp's main interface.

WhatsApp's p2p feature that will let users transfer money among themselves is one of the worst kept secrets. The update for which WhatsApp Payments is going to be available is going to be different for your Android or iOS device. They can then choose among the pretty large list of banks available, including the State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank, which are some of the biggest in the country.

Another aspect to be kept in view is that the sender, as well as the receiver, should have the WhatsApp Payments app installed in their respective devices for the transactions to take place.
