A brutal winter storm smacked the coastal Southeast with a rare blast of snow and ice, hitting parts of Florida, Georgia and SC with their heaviest snowfall in almost three decades.

National Weather Service hurricane hunter aircraft are even flying into the storm to gather data and refine the forecast given the possible severe impacts in coastal areas.

More than 3,000 USA flights have been canceled, according to FlightAware.

In the more populous Northeast, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport set an all-time low for January 6 at 8 F (minus 13C), Oravec said.

"This can happen when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, such as air over warm ocean waters", NOAA said.
