Turkey summons U.S. diplomat over Syria Kurd militia

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu alleged earlier that Syria's government forces had been delivering strikes on the units of the so-called opposition in the Idlib province "under the guise of fighting terrorists".

During the September round of Astana talks, Russia, Iran and Turkey, the three states that serve as guarantors of the Syrian ceasefire, agreed on all four de-escalation zones in Syria - one in Idlib including parts of neighboring Hama province, the second one in the north of the central province of Homs, the third one in eastern Ghouta near Damascus and the third one in the country's southern province of Deraa.

Recent Idlib offensive of the regime, with support of Russian Federation and Iran, escalated tension between the three countries, which were able to successfully calm down clashes through the Astana process.

Cavusoglu said that ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies could be harmed further if Washington does not correct its mistakes, Reuters reported. "They have a different intention".

Ankara has already summoned the Russian and Iranian ambassadors, in the biggest public flare-up of tensions with Moscow and Tehran in months.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, spearheaded by the former al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria that was known as the al-Nusra Front, is mainly dominating in Idlib.

Cavusoglu said 95 percent of the violations in Idlib were carried out by the regime and the groups backing the regime. This is also the reason for Vladimir Putin's telephone conversation with Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The escalation comes as Russian Federation is hoping to hold a Syria peace congress in its Black Sea resort of Sochi on January 29-30 bringing together all the main parties in the conflict.

Relations between Washington and Ankara have been tense over multiple issues including a United States decision previous year to deliver weapons to the YPG.

Ankara believes YPG fighters are linked with Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) separatists inside Turkey, responsible for waging armed campaign since 1984 causing death to more than 40,000 people.

Russian Federation failed to convene the gathering over Turkey's objection about YPG's participation.
