Environmental Groups Question Motives for Florida Drilling Exemption

Environmental Groups Question Motives for Florida Drilling Exemption

"The Trump Administration, through their decision on Florida, has admitted that offshore drilling is a threat to coastal economies and tourism". "Had Zinke cared about the wishes of coastal communities or how drilling off their coasts will affect them, he would have proposed a plan that shrinks drilling even further, not proposed expanding operations to almost every corner of our waters". When asked if the exemption for Florida was a political favor for Scott, Sanford said "it certainly looks, smells, and feels that way".

Shortly after the announcement, a bipartisan group of governors from states such as New York, Oregon and SC all asked publicly for their own special exceptions.

The Trump administration will take public comment on its proposals from January 16 through March 9. "Any judge who looks at a final program that exposes some states to drill risks and lets Florida off the hook is going to be skeptical about whether that decision was made in compliance with the law". Several governors, including leaders of Washington state, Delaware, Rhode Island and Maryland, asked for their states to be withdrawn from the plan and requested meetings with Zinke.

Zinke said after a brief meeting with Gov. Rick Scott, R-Fla., at the Tallahassee airport Tuesday that drilling in Florida waters would be "off the table", despite a plan that proposed drilling in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean off Florida.

New Tax Law Brings Big Bonuses for Chrysler Workers
The automaker said the two activities had become viable in part by the tax bill that President Trump signed. Fiat/Chrysler says the tax plan will also mean the return of manufacturing jobs to the USA from Mexico.

"It's another idea with big business in mind", he said.

Through all of those fights, the Trump administration has delivered federal aid to California where needed, as in the flooding and fires of 2017. He said he was concerned about military assets in Hampton Roads, which account for "nearly half" of the region's economy, and about the tourism and seafood industries.

But within the lease sale area off the Washington and OR coasts, the estimated recoverable oil reserves are a modest 400 million barrels of crude, according to an Interior Department document released last week.

With states and environmentalists expected to strongly oppose and even sue, the timeline for the final program approval could be further pushed off, and it's possible that there will be no lease sales-let alone drilling-in the next few years.

And Tuesday, Virginia Beach Rep. Scott Taylor (R) also joined the offshore drilling resistance, saying "every locality" in his district has opposed it, as has the U.S. Navy. Johnny Isakson said in an interview Wednesday.

Georgia Republican Gov. Nathan Deal issued a statement that he "has some concerns with opening up Georgia's pristine coastlines" and will convey his views to Georgia's congressional delegation.

"I think it's a possibility that there's a way that it could be done that was judicious and made sense, but you've got to make sure the environment, the investment that Georgia has already made ... are protected". Alaska and ME are the only two USA states whose governors have expressed support for the plan.

After hearing the news about Republican-governed Florida, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

In a statement, LePage said offshore drilling has the potential to create jobs and energy independence, and that sensitive areas would not be included in the final plan.
