Day after inferno, BMC carries out demolition drive in Kamala Mills

The tragic fire incident at Kamala Mills compound in Mumbai that claimed the lives of 15 people seems to have woken up Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from its slumber.

Mumbai: Fire swept through a rooftop restaurant in the Indian financial hub of Mumbai early yesterday, killing at least 14 people, majority women attending a birthday party, including the celebrant who had just turned 28, police and family said.

The civic body has issued warnings to them and sought compliance while 10 buildings have been put under prosecution, fire official said. One official said that the BMC carried out a massive campaign and organized illegal and unauthorized structures of at least 100 restaurants and pubs by noon Demolished. Hinting at corruption in the BMC, Ashish Shelar, Mumbai chief of the Bhartiya Janta Party, alleged, "It seems civic officials are hand in gloves with the business owners".

The fire broke out shortly after midnight on the third floor of the four-storeyed building on Senapati Bapat Marg, a commercial hub of the city, a civic official told PTI.

They said there were hindrances created on the emergency exit way.

According to reports, the BMC pulled down illegal extensions of 314 restaurant-bar-pubs and hookah parlours, sealing another 7 restaurants for gross violations. "Definite action must be taken where it is needed", he added.
