8 people now missing after California mudslides

Some famous residents of Southern California's Santa Barbara County are speaking out in the midst of mudslides that have killed at least 17 people.

A day after mudslides crushed several southern California homes and left at least 15 people dead, rescuers faced a hard task Wednesday as hundreds of people remain cut off by debris in one neighborhood and others are still missing, officials said.

Later in the day, however, the sheriff said the number was at 43, combining missing persons reports filed with law enforcement and also inquiries by people who hadn't been able to contact family members or friends. "So it just takes time", Mr Stoop said.

Former tennis star Jimmy Connors said in a tweet that he and his wife, Patti, had been evacuated by helicopter on Tuesday from their home in the posh hillside community. Fire spokesman MIke Eliason said the girl had been trapped for hours.

The coastal county has been hit by more natural disaster just weeks after the devastating Thomas Fire led to local evacuations, damage and heartache, as more than 20,000 residents have been uprooted by winter storms.

The wall of a home is punched through with mud and debris caused by a massive mudflow in Montecito, Jan. 10, 2018.

Up to 500 emergency responders and law enforcement officials are now searching the area for survivors using thermal imaging equipment, helicopters and sniffer dogs.

Those who have stayed in the area have been warned to boil their tap water before drinking it.

At the time, the president warned that he would take further action to nullify the deal if Congress and the allies did not act. But they have so far been unable to bridge gaps with the Democratic caucus.

Former US tennis No 1 Jimmy Connors had to be rescued from home by helicopter and chat show queen Oprah Winfrey prayed for her neighbours.

Lowe posted on Twitter that he was "preparing for whatever may come". The fatality figure could increase as at least two dozen people were considered still missing as search-and-rescue efforts continued.

Ellen DeGeneres tweeted a photo of the debris-strewn street, adding that she didn't know the fate of her home.

"I looked out my front window and saw my vehicle fly by", he said.

Peter Fleurat, 73, who studied nursing at Santa Barbara City College and worked as an end-of-life caregiver, died after water swept through his Montecito home, KSBY reported. "Please send love to Montecito".

The company that employs the mother of a 14-year-old girl who was dramatically pulled from a California home that collapsed in a mudslide says the girl's father and 16-year-old brother are still missing. Blamed for two deaths, they spread over 440 square miles, and some areas are still smouldering.

Then, this week, it started to rain.

Several homes were swept away before dawn Tuesday when mud and debris roared into neighborhoods in Montecito from hillsides stripped of vegetation during a recent wildfire. And flooding and mudslides closed a stretch of Highway 101, a crucial artery along the coast south from Santa Barbara, as well as portions of the 110 freeway.

Walmart raises minimum wage for U.S. employees, announces store closings
One-time cash bonuses of up to $1,000 per employee, based on seniority, will cost the company another $400 million. Wal-Mart said the wage increases would add about $300 million in expenses to its budget for the next fiscal year.

"It happened that quickly".

Ben Hyatt said a river of mud crashed through a neighbor's house in Montecito, the affluent community of about 8,000 east of Santa Barbara.

People in Montecito avoided the ravages of the biggest wildfire in California history last month.

"It was literally a carpet of mud and debris everywhere with huge boulders, rocks, downed trees, power lines, wrecked cars lots of obstacles".

"The neighborhood got pummeled", Mr. Tighe said.

First responders waded through waste-high mud to rescue people.

Sometime after 2 a.m. Mr. Tighe heard a loud rumbling, which he took to be boulders crashing down the hills.
