Three in Five First-Time Smokers Become Daily Smokers, Says Study

Based on survey results from 4 different countries - including the United Kingdom - the findings highlight how addictive tobacco cigarettes are, and the importance of ensuring that stop smoking services are made available to help people quit.

As per the study, at least 3 out of 5 people who try a cigarette become daily smokers.

They said that the study, published in the journal Nicotine And Tobacco Research, provides support for reducing cigarette experimentation among teenagers.

Around two-thirds of people who try their first cigarette go on to become daily smokers, at least temporarily.

Trump likely to be questioned on Russian Federation probe
Trump himself has previously expressed concern over any potential attempt by Mueller to look into his financial situation. Legally , the president is entitled to plead the Fifth Amendment even if he maintains he can not be indicted in office.

After the research, the team compared data collected from the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand and found that around 60.3 percent people had tried smoking at some point of their lifetime and around 68.9 per cent of people developed a daily habit of smoking.

The researchers searched the Global Health Data Exchange for relevant surveys that included questions about ever trying a cigarette and ever smoking daily.

They found 60.3 per cent had tried a cigarette, of whom 68.9 per cent progressed to habitual smoking. Only 19 per cent from age group 11 to 15 has ever tried a cigarette.

This is the first time a link between trying cigarettes and establishing a smoking habit has been demonstrated with such a large data set, Hajek added.

President Winfrey? No way, says Trump: 'I'll beat Oprah'
But King did acknowledge a glimmer of hope for those dreaming of an Oprah bid: "I do think she's intrigued by the idea". And Oprah also won praise from tablemates Eva Longoria and Keith Urban. "By the way, where is @Oprah?" he tweeted.

'We've found that the conversion rate from "first-time smoker" to "daily smoker" is surprisingly high, which helps confirm the importance of preventing cigarette experimentation in the first place'.

One was that the surveys had yielded different results for the proportions who had progressed to becoming daily smokers - from 52% in one in the USA to 82% in one in the United Kingdom - which meant the 68.9% figure was an estimate, as a weighted average of the figures.

But Professor Hajek, who has provided consultancy for and received research funding from makers of stop-smoking medications, said this instant addiction did not appear to apply to e-cigarettes.

More than two-thirds of people who try cigarettes once become daily smokers, even if only for a short time, a new study suggests. "The presence of nicotine is clearly not the whole story", Hajek said. The results also didn't show how long these people took up smoking for. Smoking rates were lowest in England (15.5%) and highest in Northern Ireland (18.1%).
