US Orders Takata to Recall Millions More Airbags

An additional 3.3 million cars using Takata airbag inflators have been added to an already massive recall list.

The latest round affects cars made by Honda, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Tesla, and it covers certain vehicles built between 2009 and 2010 and some from 2013.

According to reports, these recalls are being overlooked by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and are being phased over the coming three years.

The problem with the air bags is centered on a chemical inside the air bag inflator called ammonium nitrate, which is used to inflate the air bag during a crash. Sources have touted this recall for airbag inflators to be the largest in the history of US automotive industry, which is withdrawing more than 69 million inflators in over 42 million vehicles across the globe.

Specific models will be released later this month. If that happens, the airbag can explode with greater force than intended, sending metal fragments into the vehicle's cabin, and could injure or kill the driver or front passenger.

According to the NHTSA, 34 million vehicles are under the recall for approximately 46 million defective airbags. Older models and those in states with high humidity and temperatures are getting priority. Once production of the replacements for defective inflators are completed, Takata will shutter its airbag division.

So far, the recalls have effected 19 automakers who have had to recall about 69 million air bag inflators in 42 million vehicles, CBS reported. Of those, only 18.5 million, or 43 percent, have been replaced even though Takata recalls began in 2001. The agency also has the authority to fine automakers that don't make recall repairs in a timely manner.
