By hiring Gutekunst, Murphy passed over Russ Ball, the team's Vice-President of Football Operations/Player Finance and Eliot Wolf, the son of former GM Ron Wolf, now the team's Director of Football Operations.

Instead the Packers were forced to focus on in-house candidates, which meant they were going to focus on Gutekunst, Russ Ball and Eliot Wolf.

Gutekunst has spent 19 years working in the Packers' personnel department. Most notably is the Packers at least showing some interest in former scout/personnel man turned Seahawks general manager John Schneider. He has been the Packers' director of player personnel since 2016. He was promoted to his current position two years ago. NFL Network reports he was also being considered for similar jobs in Houston and was there for an interview when the Packers made their offer.

The Packers have not officially announced a hiring. He played two seasons for the Eagles before a shoulder injury ended his playing career and he spent his final two years as a student serving as a coach.

Gutekunst is expected to be introduced at a news conference early next week. He joined the Packers' full-time in 1998.
