Man dies after picking up explosive device outside Stockholm metro station

A man in Stockholm picked up a suspected hand grenade from the ground and it detonated in his hand Sunday, killing him and injuring his companion, Swedish police said.

Tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen reported that the blast was thought to have been caused by a hand grenade, but police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson declined to confirm the reports.

"This had then exploded and hurt the man seriously".

"We're suspecting that it's a hand grenade of some sort", Lars Alvarsjo, chief of Stockholm's southern police district, told the Swedish national broadcaster SVT.

Police cordoned off the station and the square where the blast happened as the bomb squad moved in to investigate.

According to a Swedish police report published past year, Sweden is the European country where criminal gangs use the most grenades, often from stocks from the former Yugoslavia.
