Suspected cholera cases reach one million in Yemen

In the eight months or so that cholera first began spreading in Yemen, the waterborne disease has put a bad toll on the war-torn country's population - a whopping one million have caught it.

Yemen's cholera epidemic has reached one million suspected cases, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday, with war leaving more than 80 per cent of the population short of food, fuel, clean water and access to healthcare.

Yemen, one of the Arab world's poorest countries, is embroiled in a proxy war between the Houthi armed movement, and a US -backed military coalition headed by Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh's ongoing air and sea blockade has sealed off Yemen from the world and has resulted in what the United Nations is calling the world's largest humanitarian crisis, as over 10 million people at a minimum are in need of immediate assistance, according to the New York Times.

The outbreak, which began in October 2016 and escalated in April, has killed more than 2,000 people.
